Why every freelancer with a modern laptop needs a USB-C hub (and which one I travel with)
Modern laptops ship with two or three USB-C ports and nothing else. A good hub turns one of those ports into HDMI, USB-A, SD card slots, and charging. Without it, you are constantly plugging and unplugging cables.
Last March I sat down at a coworking space in Porto with a brand new client. I had thirty minutes to set up before a video call. The difficulty is finding a hub that actually delivers on every port without overheating, dropping video, or blocking your WiFi.

A docking station is larger, often sits on your desk with its own power brick, and turns your laptop into a desktop workstation. It may have two HDMI or DisplayPort outputs, four or more USB-A ports, ethernet, audio in and out, and 85W to 100W of laptop charging. Prices range from $150 to $350.
If you work from one desk most of the time and use two monitors, get a dock. If you move between locations or only need one external screen, get a hub. I own one of each. The dock stays at home. The hub goes in my bag.
What to check before you buy
Power delivery wattage
The hub will advertise a wattage number for pass-through charging. This is the amount of power it sends to your laptop after powering its own internals. If the hub claims 100W total but uses 15W for itself, your laptop gets 85W. For a 13-inch MacBook Air, 45W is enough. For a 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro, or any Windows laptop with a dedicated GPU, you want 65W or more. I aim for 85W on any hub I buy now, because I do not want to wonder whether my battery is draining during a long export.
HDMI version and resolution
Many hubs claim “4K support” but only at 30Hz, which makes your mouse cursor feel sluggish. Look for 4K at 60Hz, or at least 1080p at 60Hz if you use a standard monitor. The product page should specify the refresh rate. If it does not, assume 30Hz.
USB-A speed
USB 3.0, also called USB 3.2 Gen 1, transfers at 5Gbps. USB 2.0 is 480Mbps, which is fine for a mouse but painful for a large file transfer. If you move video files or raw photos regularly, make sure the hub has at least one USB 3.0 port. Some budget hubs label their ports without specifying the speed. Read the specs.
SD card slot speed
A full-size SD card slot is useful for photographers and video editors. UHS-I speed is standard and fast enough for most use. UHS-II is faster but rare in hubs under $100. I use the SD slot on my hub almost weekly to pull footage from a camera, and UHS-I has never been the bottleneck.
Ethernet
Not every hub has an ethernet port, but it is worth having if you work from coworking spaces with unreliable WiFi. Gigabit ethernet is standard on mid-range hubs. I used the ethernet port on my hub during a week in Berlin when the building’s WiFi dropped every twenty minutes. The wired connection saved a client deadline.
Build quality and heat
Cheap hubs get hot when you push them. Excessive heat can throttle the internal chipset and cause dropped connections. Metal housings dissipate heat better than plastic. If a hub review mentions overheating, believe it.

The ethernet port is the feature that made me choose this over smaller 6-in-1 hubs. Coworking spaces, airports, and hotels all have WiFi that works until it does not. Having a wired fallback has saved me more than once. The cable is built into the hub and wraps around the body for travel, which means I do not lose it.
The downside is the size. It is small, yet it is still larger than the slim dongle-style hubs that are popular right now. It takes up space in my bag. I accept that trade because the extra ports earn their keep. The SD slot alone saves me from carrying a separate card reader.
Heat has never been an issue. I have run it for eight hours with a monitor, mouse, and external SSD attached, and it gets warm but not hot. Anker’s aluminum housing helps.

The performance is the difference between a hub and a dock. Both external monitors run at 4K 60Hz with no lag. Large file transfers to my SSD happen at Thunderbolt speeds. I never think about whether a port will work. It always does.
The downside is the footprint. The TS4 is a solid block of metal about the size of a paperback book. It sits on my desk and does not move. It also requires its own 180W power brick, which is the size of a laptop charger and lives under my desk. This is not a travel device. This is a desktop appliance.
If you work from one desk and you want your laptop to become a true workstation when you plug in one cable, the TS4 is the best dock I have used. If you travel often, buy a hub instead.

The HDMI is stable. I used it for three weeks as my primary connection to a 27-inch monitor and never lost signal. The USB-A ports handled a mouse and a thumb drive simultaneously with no slowdown. The SD slot is UHS-I and reads cards at about 90MB per second, which is standard for this price.
The catch is long-term reliability. Budget hubs sometimes develop loose connections after six months of daily plugging and unplugging. I have only used this one for about four months total, so I cannot speak to year-two durability. At $25, even a year of service is acceptable value.

What I returned: a 12-in-1 hub with too many compromises
I bought a generic 12-in-1 hub during a Prime Day sale for $40. It promised VGA, HDMI, three USB-A ports, USB-C charging, ethernet, SD, microSD, audio, and a headphone jack. It sounded like the ultimate travel hub.
It was a mess. The VGA port caused the HDMI to flicker whenever both were connected. The ethernet port was only 100Mbps, not gigabit, which made it pointless. The USB-A ports were a mix of USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, but they were not labeled, so I had to test each one to find the fast port. The housing was plastic and warped slightly after a hot day in my bag.
I returned it after a week. The lesson is that more ports does not mean better ports. A 7-in-1 hub that does every port correctly beats a 12-in-1 that does half of them badly. Port count is a marketing number. Port quality is what matters.
Who should skip the hub entirely
If your laptop already has the ports you need, you do not need a hub. Some 15-inch and 16-inch Windows laptops still ship with USB-A, HDMI, and SD card slots built in. If that describes your machine, spend the money on something else.
Also, if you only ever work from one desk and you already own a dock, a travel hub is still useful but not urgent. I went two years as a freelancer without one because I rarely left my home office. The Port incident in Porto forced the issue. If you are still fully home-based, you can wait.
How to set up a hub without losing your mind
Plug the hub into the USB-C port closest to the back of your laptop, or whichever port is designated for charging. On some laptops, only one port supports full Thunderbolt or charging speed. Check your manual if you are unsure.
Connect the charger to the hub’s USB-C power delivery port, not to the laptop directly. This routes everything through the hub and gives you true one-cable docking. If you plug the charger into the laptop and the hub into a different port, you lose the single-cable convenience.
For monitor connection, use the shortest HDMI cable that reaches. Long cables can pick up interference, especially in cheap hubs with minimal shielding. I use a 1-meter cable at my desk and a 0.5-meter cable in my travel kit.
If your hub has an SD card slot, eject the card through your operating system before unplugging the hub. I have corrupted a card once by yanking the hub while a transfer was finishing in the background.
