Dual-band means it broadcasts on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 5 GHz band is faster and less congested. In that same Berlin meetup where the crawled, the TP-Link pulled 65 Mbps on 5 GHz while the Mango choked. For nomads who work from coworking spaces, airports, or anywhere with more than ten people online, that gap is the difference between a usable Zoom call and a slideshow of frozen faces.
The Ethernet port is also more reliable. The Mango requires a USB power source and a separate Ethernet adapter for some configurations. The TP-Link plugs directly into a wall outlet via the bundled power adapter, takes an Ethernet cable, and just works. I bought the M1 in 2024 before a month-long trip through rural Portugal and Spain. My plan was to rely on local SIM cards for internet instead of hunting for cafe WiFi every morning. If you travel domestically with an unlimited data plan and your phone hotspot handles your laptop fine, a dedicated travel router is redundant. Your phone already creates a private network.
