Where it wins
Local SIM compatibility means you buy a local data SIM in any country, pop it in, and connect. No accounts, no apps, no cloud services. In Portugal my Vodafone SIM gave me 30GB for fifteen euros. That same amount through a global service would have cost three times as much.
The display shows data usage, signal strength, battery life, and connected devices. It is monochrome and basic, but it works in sunlight and does not drain the battery.
Battery life is solid at about ten hours of real use. It charges by standard micro-USB, which is slightly outdated but means you probably already own the cable.
Where it falls short
No cloud SIM means you need to source a local SIM in every country. If you land at midnight in a country where SIM vendors close at 8pm, you are offline until morning. I hit this problem once in rural Turkey and once in a small Vietnamese town. Both times I wished I had a backup data plan.

What went wrong
It is enormous. The size of a thick paperback book. It does not fit in small bags, and it weighs enough that I noticed it every time I packed. For a device meant to travel, the physical design is wrong.
The gigabit LTE speed never materialized in real conditions. I tested it in Lisbon, Bangkok, and Istanbul on three different carriers. The best speed I recorded was 45 Mbps down. That is fast, but the G4 Pro reached 30 Mbps in the same spots at a fifth of the price.
The ethernet failover feature is the only thing I miss. Twice in co-working spaces I connected the Nighthawk to ethernet and broadcast a private WiFi network to my laptop and phone. That was genuinely useful, but not $350 useful.
Who it is actually for
Teams of four or five sharing a single connection in a fixed location. RV owners who want a mobile router. Remote workers who need ethernet passthrough and do not care about size. Solo nomads should look elsewhere.

Setup tips from someone who has been caught offline
Download offline maps before you travel. Google Maps lets you save regions for offline use. Do it for every city you visit. Nothing is more stressful than trying to find a SIM shop when you cannot load a map.

What about Starlink?
